Day 3: The Table of Covenant – “This is My Body”
Matthew Elliott - [Matthew 26:26–29; Mark 14:22–25; Luke 22:14–20]
There’s something strangely ordinary about the moment Jesus chose to change everything. A table. Some bread and a cup, if we didn’t know the story, we might skip right past it and assume it was just another meal. But Jesus has this way of taking something simple and filling it with a meaning that feels too big for the room it happens in.
When He lifted the bread and said, “This is My body,” I imagine the disciples looking around at each other a bit confused. They’d seen Jesus do miracles, cast out demons, calm storms… but this? Bread? A body? It probably didn’t fully click for the disciples or understand the significance
What strikes me is how Jesus doesn’t wait for the disciples to “get it” before He gives Himself. They were still arguing about who’d be the greatest, still missing the point, still about to fail Him before sunrise. Yet He gives the bread anyway. He gives Himself anyway. No long lecture, no conditions, no “when you’re finally mature enough to understand.”
Just an invitation: Take, eat.
This is my body given for you.
It’s strangely comforting that the covenant journey starts not with our promises to God, but with Jesus’ promise to us. His broken body becomes the doorway into a relationship we could never earn.
I also love that He uses bread — because bread is daily. It’s normal. It’s on the table whether life is going great or falling apart. Maybe Jesus chose something so ordinary because He wanted to remind us He’s with us in the ordinary too. Not just in the big Easter moments, or emotional worship services , but also in the tired mornings and the days when life feels more like crawling by faith than running.
Easter is about resurrection, yes — but before resurrection comes a table. A covenant. A moment where Jesus says, “I’m giving everything for you. I’m not holding anything back.” Sometimes, maybe we forget that.
So today, just remember: Jesus still sets the table for you. Still offers Himself. Still saying, “This is My body… for you.” Even on the days you feel you don’t deserve it or don’t feel very holy or can’t find the perfect words. He’s not asking for perfection. He’s giving Himself anyway.
Todays Prayer
Jesus, thank You for giving Your body for me. Help me remember that Your covenant is stronger than my weaknesses. Remind me / Teach me to come to Your table just as I am. Amen.
