Day 33: Christ the Victor – Death Defeated

Karen Ducille (1 Corinthians 15:54–57)

1 Corinthians 15:54–57 (NLT)

Vs. 54 – Then, when our dying bodies have been transformed into bodies that will never die, this scripture will be fulfilled:
Vs. 55 – Death is swallowed up in victory. O death, where is your sting?
Vs. 56 – For sin is the sting that results in death, and the law gives sin its power.
Vs. 57 – But thank God! He gives us victory over sin and death through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Jesus’s life laid the foundation for how we should live; however, His victory over death solidifies our Christian faith. The resurrection is the cornerstone of our faith, and we are confident in Christ as the victor — and this is not a subject for debate.

Growing up, I would often hear this scripture being quoted or read at funerals, and I had the misconception that death was something to be feared — and rightfully so if you are outside of Christ (Revelation 20:14–15). But as I have grown both physically and spiritually, I have come to realize that as believers, we do not have to fear death, as this mortal body will be transformed — not only transformed, but death will have lost its sting, as was prophesied in Isaiah 25:8: “He will swallow up death forever.” What a glorious promise! It makes me want to shout with joy.

I believe Paul in Philippians 1:21 fully understood the victory of the cross, and he declared that in spite of everything that was going on at the time, he wasn’t afraid of dying because he understood what death meant for the believer. Paul's motivation was to serve Jesus, and even though he longed for home, he had a Christlike desire to serve others, helping them grow spiritually and fulfill their God-given purpose.

Vs. 55 – O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?

When I think of a sting, I know the Bible mentions scorpions; however, the first thing that comes to mind is a wasp. When a wasp stings, it injects venom that causes pain, swelling, and itching; it can even cause death if a person has an anaphylactic shock due to an allergic reaction. Biblically, sting represents death caused by the painful, destructive power of sin, which ultimately causes death.

Jesus made a mockery of death, and death became a victory for us as believers.

For the believer in Jesus Christ, death is not the end. The day we die is really a transition day when we go to live with the Lord forever. We should consider death as merely a doorway to eternity. We can be confident that we will live forever with Christ. Death no longer has a sting, and Jesus reigns victorious because death is defeated.

Let us ask ourselves the following questions, and whatever your answer, bring it before God and be totally honest:

  • As we are reminded about Christ’s victory over death, what feeling does it evoke for you?

  • Are you able to rejoice, despite any circumstances you might be facing, knowing death is not the end?

  • Are you able to say like Paul: “For me to live is Christ, but to die is gain; however, whilst I have breath, I will fulfill God’s purpose for my life?”
