Day 8: Morning Trial – Truth Prevails in the Midst of adversity
Katie Heap (Matthew 27:1-2; Luke 22:66-71)
Matthew 27:1–2: “When morning came, all the chief priests and the elders of the people took counsel against Jesus to put him to death. And they bound him and led him away and delivered him over to Pilate the governor.”
Luke 22:66–71: “When day came, the assembly of the elders of the people gathered together, both chief priests and scribes. And they led him away to their council, and they said, ‘If you are the Christ, tell us.’ But he said to them, ‘If I tell you, you will not believe, and if I ask you, you will not answer. But from now on the Son of Man shall be seated at the right hand of the power of God.’ So they all said, ‘Are you the Son of God, then?’ And he said to them, ‘You say that I am.’ Then they said, ‘What further testimony do we need? We have heard it ourselves from his own lips.’”
The religious rulers are feeling threatened and had a plan to trap Jesus by trying to get him to ‘blaspheme’ in front of the court by saying that he is the Son of God.
Isn’t it amazing how, despite the situation Jesus is currently in—bound, on trial, rejected by many, abandoned by his disciples, about to be led to his death—yet despite all the appearance of the enemy having the upper hand, he quotes Scripture, prophesying how he is seated at the right hand of the Father (Psalm 110) and how he has been given all dominion in heaven and on earth (Daniel 7).
Jesus isn’t distracted or phased by the religious leaders trying to trap and silence his voice. He knows his mission—that it is not long before he is revealed in all his glory as the Son of God who will take away the sins of the world. He stays steady and steadfast, knowing that this chaos is all part of the plan. He speaks the truth in a situation that looks the opposite.
In our lives, we all can face situations that look like the complete opposite of the promise God gave. What we declare and decree in times of challenge and chaos is fundamental to the building of our faith, the silencing of the enemy, and the ground we take back from the enemy!
Just like Jesus, Psalm 8:6 describes how God has put everything under our feet too, and we will rule and reign with him in glory.
